Drill Pipe Usage and Maintenance Instructions

1. When using a new drill pipe for the first time, wipe off the protective grease from the threads, clean the inner wall of the drill pipe with air or water, and then apply thread lubricant to both the internal and external threads to prevent thread damage or sticking.

2. When drilling, ensure the hole is as vertical as possible to avoid skewing or bending, which can cause premature wear of the drill pipe.

3. The impactor should be connected to the first drill pipe via a starting rod; otherwise, the first drill pipe will be damaged prematurely.

4. Each time you connect a drill pipe, remember to apply thread lubricant to the threads and tighten the drill pipe. If it is not tightened, the threaded connection will be loose, causing the threads to grind against each other, resulting in sharpened tooth tips, leading to thread damage or sticking. If it is not tightened properly, the female thread step will not be pressed tightly, causing air leakage, and in severe cases, fatigue fracture at the root of the male connector thread.

5. When connecting the drill rod, the male thread must not collide with the shoulder and thread of the female thread, and the male and female connectors must be aligned. Do not force connection if they are not aligned. Ensure the coaxiality of the drill rig’s power head spindle and the connecting drill rod.

6. Inspect the wear of each part of the drill rod. If abnormal wear is found, find the cause immediately:

(1) Are there any sharp, hard objects (or hard rock edges) scratching the drill rod inside the hole? Use with caution if the scratch depth on the drill rod body is <0.5mm and is more than one full circle (spiral); if the scratch depth is ≥0.5mm, do not use to avoid drill rod breakage and greater losses.

(2) Is the borehole skewed, bent, or has collapsed, causing wear or deformation of the drill rod?

(3) Damage to the drill rod caused by construction in abnormal strata such as gravel layers, fracture layers, and reinforced concrete layers.

7. The following conditions indicate normal wear; please replace the drill pipe promptly:

⑴ Uniform, smooth wear on the outer surface of the drill pipe joint or outer surface, with the outer diameter reduced to less than 2mm below the standard size after wear.

⑵ Uniform, smooth wear on the threads of the male and female joints, with the tooth crests forming sharp angles.

8. Do not mix drill pipes from different manufacturers to prevent sticking or premature thread wear. Different manufacturers use different technical parameters, processing methods, and precision tools and equipment, resulting in different thread tolerances and tightness.

9. Do not mix drill pipes that are significantly different in age or wear level to avoid construction hazards.

10. When uncoupling the drill pipe is difficult, gently vibrate the threaded area of ​​the joint with a small hammer. Never use a large hammer to violently strike the joint, as this can deform and damage the threads.

11. If small, localized damage (approximately 1-2 turns, 10mm in length) is found on the drill pipe threads, repair it with a file before use.

12. Drill pipes should not be stored outdoors for extended periods. Before storage, the drill pipes should be wiped clean, and anti-rust grease should be applied to the threaded parts. Protective caps should be placed on the drill pipes. When handling drill pipes, avoid impacts that could damage the male threads.
