From material selection to final inspection, North Star controls the processes that determine drill pipe performance, consistency and service life.

Quality is not a final check.

It is built into the way North Star selects materials, controls production, verifies critical dimensions and processes, and releases finished products.

Material Control
Premium and standard steel grades are selected for the required application and performance.

Process Control
Forging, heat treatment, machining and welding are controlled through defined manufacturing processes.

Inspection & Testing
Dimensional, hardness, non-destructive tests and final inspections verify conformance before shipment.

MATERIAL CONTROL

The quality of the finished product starts with the material.

North Star offers Premium and Standard steel grades and maintains strict control over material selection. We do not vary steel grades simply to reduce short-term raw material cost.

Application-led material selection
Steel grades, tube materials and tool-joint materials are matched to the product, drilling conditions and required performance.

Forging
Controlled forming creates the required geometry and supports consistent mechanical performance.

Heat Treatment
In-house heat treatment is used to achieve controlled hardness and case depth for applicable products.

CNC Machining
CNC tooling and technology support specification accuracy and repeatable thread machining.

Welding
Friction welding and submerged arc welding are available, with weld quality verified through inspection.

Inspection & Testing

Critical characteristics are checked throughout production rather than left to the end of the line.

Batch Laboratory Testing
Heat-treated products are tested by individual batch to confirm compliance with product specifications.

Ultrasonic Testing
Welds are inspected in-house using non-destructive ultrasonic testing methods.

Straightness & Concentricity
Dimensional checks verify compliance with manufacturing specifications.

Thread Inspection
Machined threads are individually inspected using certified plug and ring gages.

Hardness & Case Depth
Hardness and case-depth checks verify heat-treatment performance where applicable.

Final OQC
An independent OQC team performs final inspection and document checks before shipment.

Quality Control Flow

A controlled sequence keeps quality visible from the first material check through final release.

Incoming Material
Review material grade and incoming condition.

Forming & Manufacturing
Control forging, machining and welding parameters.

Heat Treatment
Control the treatment process and verify required properties.

Inspection
Verify threads, welds, hardness, straightness and other critical characteristics.

Final OQC
Complete final product and document checks.

Release
Only conforming products proceed to marking, finishing and shipment.

PROCESS PERFORMANCE

Hardness. Accuracy. Repeatability.

For applicable DTH products, North Star’s ion nitriding process is specified at a surface hardness of 650–750 HV with a hardness depth of 0.1–0.2 mm. In-house heat treatment supports controlled surface performance and case depth.

Repeatability & traceability

North Star’s Production and QA teams apply strict control and record-keeping requirements across key manufacturing processes. The objective is simple: make critical quality characteristics measurable, repeatable and reviewable.
